Frontier Spirits Quilt Patterns –
to Commemorate and Preserve the Past
Because my Trail of Thread book series talks about twelve old-time patterns in each book, it was a natural progression to have quilt patterns made to feature them.
Many quilters are also readers of history, and are fascinated with seeing the sketches of the quilt patterns in the back of my books.
So here are my Frontier Spirits “Pieces of the West” Quilt Patterns to commemorate the pioneer women that homesteaded the western prairie in my book series. Just as in pioneer days, quilts today allow us to express and preserve our feelings and emotions. This is a way to tie and honor the past quilts and quilt makers with them through my quilt patterns.
Included in these patterns are instructions for both the featured wall quilt, and for a full-sized quilt. A fabric and supply list is included in what you need to complete the item. The patterns include “The Inside Story”, which describes each block’s origin, and why it was selected.

Trail of Thread Quilt Pattern
This quilt pattern was inspired by my book, Trail of Thread. The historical letters in this book take us along the difficult wagon trail to Kansas in 1854. Quilt and quilt patterns were a treasured part of pioneer women’s lives, and they were shared and traded on the journey west. Fabric colors for these quilts were chosen to express the visual experience along the trail. Wall quilt size is 52″ x 52″. $8.99, free shipping. Click here to order.
Thimble of Soil Quilt Pattern
This quilt was inspired by my book, Thimble of Soil. The historical letters of widow Margaret Ralston Kennedy, written in 1854-1860, tell a captivating story of the trail to Kansas, homesteading, and her love for family. The center of the quilt features two long house blocks, as home and family were the core of Margaret’s life. Surround these are many log cabin blocks for the many friends and neighbors she helped. Wall quilt size is 52″ x 52″. $8.99, free shipping. Click here to order.
Stitch of Courage Quilt Pattern
This quilt pattern was inspired by the book, Stitch of Courage by Linda K. Hubalek. The compelling pioneer story expressed through historical letters was just the beginning; awakening feelings of gratitude for those who fight for our freedom. The result was this patriotic quilt. The colors were selected to convey strength and courage through struggle and loss, and remember those who lost their lives in war. Wall quilt size is 50″x50″. $8.99, free shipping. Burning Fork Quilt Pattern
This quilt pattern was designed to commemorate the adventurous life of Elinore Pruitt Stewart, as described through her own letters in the book, Letters of a Woman Homesteader. In 1909 Elinore decided that she wanted to homestead on the Wyoming prairie. With her young daughter, she took a train to Brunt Fork, Wyoming, where she filed a claim for a ranch and went on to prove that a woman could make it on the frontier. This pattern’s blocks and colors reflect the prairies and the hopes of this courageous pioneer woman who moved to Burnt Fork, Wyoming in 1909 to follow her dream of homesteading. Wall quilt size is 36″ x 48″. $8.99, free shipping. Click here to order.
